Answer Engine Optimisation (AEO) is the practice of structuring content so AI systems can extract and cite it as a direct answer. The three core elements are: direct answer sentences at the start of each section, FAQPage schema markup, and explicit entity clarity throughout the content.
Google AI Overviews, Perplexity and ChatGPT are answering questions without sending users to your site. The search result that matters is increasingly not the blue link at position 1: it is the AI-generated summary above all the links, the featured snippet, or the People Also Ask box.
What Changed
Until 2023, winning a featured snippet was a nice bonus on top of a good ranking. Since Google’s rollout of AI Overviews in 2024, it has become a primary traffic channel in its own right. AI Overviews appear for informational and educational queries where featured snippets already dominated. The combined effect is that the top organic position for a high-intent informational keyword now captures significantly less CTR than it did two years ago.
AI search engines like Perplexity add a third dimension: they answer queries by synthesising multiple sources, with citations that drive traffic back to the original content. Appearing as a Perplexity source generates less traffic than a traditional search click but builds brand recognition and authority in AI-generated answers across the web.
AEO Techniques That Work
Structure every section around a question. The H2 or H3 heading should be the question. The first sentence after the heading should be the direct answer. Everything that follows expands the answer.
Add FAQPage schema. This is the highest-ROI structured data implementation for AEO. Each question and answer must be visible in the page HTML, not hidden behind an accordion or tab, and the schema text must exactly match the visible text.
Use specific numbers. “CTR increases by 30% with schema” is extractable. “CTR improves significantly with schema” is not. LLMs and featured snippet algorithms both prefer specific, attributable claims.
